According to the Mayo Clinic, treatments those inflicted may utilize for Tay-Sachs are, first, they can give their child many medications including anti-seizure medication because they may benefit from the medication. (“Tay-Sachs Disease”).
Another mode of treatment that they may benefit from is to help clear up their respiratory systems which can help them with their lung infections (“Tay-Sachs Disease”). They may also give them feeding tubes because if their child has problems swallowing or drinking, feeding tubes will be the best option for their child (“Tay-Sachs Disease”). They may benefit from physical therapy to help their joints and their mobility. According to The National Tay-Sachs & And Allied Diseases Association, there is a lot of research being conducted on Tay-Sachs. The first one I will be referencing is called “Tay Sachs Gene Therapy Consortium”. This project seeks to delve into the gene pool and experiment with gene therapy to find a cure for Tay-Sachs ("Tay-Sachs Research"). The second one which I will discuss is called “Substrate Reduction Therapy: Zavesca®”. This project’s goal is to evaluate the effectiveness of a new treatment drug called “miglustat”. It is still in the testing phase but so far it has proven to have benefits for those inflicted ("Tay-Sachs Research"). Finally, Duke University Medical Center is considering if a Bone Marrow Transplant may be a helpful treatment option for those with Tay-Sachs. It is not yet approved for clinical testing ("Tay-Sachs Research). |
